Get To Know Janet Rath Colaluca!

Judge Janet Rath Colaluca has served the residents of Cleveland and Bratenahl as a Judge of the Cleveland Municipal Court since 2016. In this role, she presides over misdemeanor criminal and traffic cases, felony arraignments, as well as civil cases that fall within the Court’s jurisdictional limits.

Judge Janet has devoted her 25 + years as a lawyer to public service, serving with distinction, as Judge in the Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court, as well as a Magistrate in the Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations and Probate Courts, and as a Magistrate in the Mayor’s Court in the Village of Bratenahl.

Judge Janet also maintained a thriving private practice when she was not serving on the bench, providing her with a widened perspective and appreciation of our judicial system at work. Judge Janet’s diversity of experience lends itself well to her work at the Cleveland Municipal Court. Each day she is focused on protecting victims, helping eligible offenders obtain assistance and resources from the Court’s many diversion programs and specialized dockets, as well as helping traffic offenders get back on track to safe, legal, and insured driving.

Judge Janet handles a Dedicated Domestic Violence Docket, which is intended to improve responses to domestic violence, increase offender accountability, and enhance victim safety. She is passionate about ensuring compliance with No Contact and Orders of Protection, ensuring defendants and convicted offenders fully comply with all Court Orders. She also serves on the Cuyahoga County Domestic Violence Task Force, where she meets with various stakeholders in the community, including: representatives of law enforcement, victim advocates, and social services, in an effort to coordinate enforcement, compliance, and services available for all parties.

Judge Janet is a proud life-long Cuyahoga County resident, born and raised in the West Park neighborhood of Cleveland. She is one of six children born to a father, who was an electrical engineer and first-generation American of Irish and German descent, and to a mother who was a homemaker and social worker. Judge Janet’s parents taught her and her brothers and sisters the value of hard work and perseverance. She attended Our Lady of Angels grade school and St. Joseph Academy High School and went onto earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from John Carroll University. She received her Juris Doctor Degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1991.

Judge Janet is committed and guided by the cornerstones of Family, Faith, and Service to Others. Her respect for Justice and the Law is deep-rooted. One of her favorite quotes, and one which she reflects often upon is from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

While serving on the bench, Judge Janet insists upon treating all parties with dignity and respect and insuring each person’s right to be heard while striving for the best possible outcomes for all involved.

Judge Janet was a member of the Domestic Relations Procedure Committee of the Ohio Judicial College and is a member of the Ohio Women’s Bar Association, the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, the Westshore Bar Association, the Justinian Forum and the Ohio Judicial College. Her civic activities have included participation in: the Junior League of Cleveland, the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland, Healthhill Children’s Hospital, and Templum House, which raised funds to benefit a shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Judge Janet and her husband currently reside in Bratenahl with their two children and are very involved in their Church and children’s school.
